#7 Concordia Captures Third Straight CACC Championship with 5-1 Victory over Philadelphia U.
Bronxville, NY – The seventh-ranked Concordia College Clippers men's tennis team captured the 2012 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship on Sunday afternoon. The No. 1 seeded Clippers, who won their third straight CACC title, took a 5-1 victory over the No. 3 seed Rams of Philadelphia University.
The Clippers took an early 2-0 lead after Daniele Piludu (Cagliari, Italy) and Geza Bazula (Budapest, Hungary) won their No. 1 doubles match 8-1 as well as the No. 3 doubles duo of Ricardo Frey (Curitiba, Brazil) and Jason Quintana (Holtsville, NY). The No. 2 doubles match involving Concordia's David Tisserand (Lyon, France) and Andreas Lindell (Helsingborg, Sweden) would go down to the wire as the Rams fought hard.
Philadelphia led 6-4 in the second doubles match as the Clippers came back to take a 7-6 lead. The Rams tied the score at 7-7 and then at 8-8 as Philadelphia looked for the set victory. In the tiebreaker, the Rams edged Concordia 8-6 to win the set 9-8 (6) as the Clippers' streak of consecutive sets won in CACC play was snapped at 181.
In singles, Concordia would be in control to finish the match. Tomasz Olfans' (Opole, Poland) No. 3 match would be the first to conclude with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over his opponent. Minutes later Tisserand took a 6-0, 6-2 win in his No. 2 match as the Clippers took a 4-1 lead.
With all eyes on the No. 1 match of Piludu, the twentieth-ranked player in the nation, his victory would seal the championship for Concordia. He took the first set 6-2 and calmly finished off his opponent 6-3 to give the Clippers the victory.
During the awards ceremony following the match, Concordia's Piludu would be named the tournament's most valuable player while Bazula, Olfans and Tisserand were named to the 2012 CACC All-Tournament Team.
With the victory the Clippers (17-7, 6-0 CACC) have clinched a spot in the 2012 NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championships. Concordia will await their draw in the tournament when it will be announced during the live selection show on NCAA.com this Tuesday, April 24th, at 8pm.
