Juniors Set Career Highs For Men's Basketball In 73-66 Setback At Caldwell

CALDWELL, N.J. – Junior forwards Anthony Barnes (Bowie, Md.) and Jesse Breeding (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) made their presence felt on defense with three blocks apiece on Wednesday evening, a career-high for both, with Barnes adding a personal-record 10 rebounds in the Concordia College New York men's basketball team's 73-66 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) setback at Caldwell University.

• Concordia falls to 9-18, 6-12 in CACC play.

• Caldwell improves to 17-10, 13-5 in league action.

• Barnes added a career-high matching two steals.

• Senior guard Michael Demello (White Plains, N.Y.) scored a team-high 13 points with three assists and three steals.

• Sophomore guard Baron Goodridge (Bronx, N.Y.) dished out a team-best four assists.

• Redshirt senior guard Cedrick McFadden (Washington, D.C.) chipped in 12 points with three assists and three steals.

• For Caldwell, AJ Kittles scored 20 points while Ned Ogoemesim recorded a double-double behind 14 points and 11 rebounds on top of three assists.

• The two sides exchanged three pointers to begin the contest, with McFadden scoring for Concordia, for a 3-all score with 18:00 remaining in the contest.  

• The host used a 10-4 stretch with senior guard Jayson Cethoute (Queens, N.Y.) and Breeding scoring for the Clippers to create a 13-7 lead with 14:31 remaining in the contest.

• Concordia made it a one-possession game at 14-11, with a 7-0 rally off a three-point play from freshman forward Devon Sims (Centreville, Va.) and back-to-back Demello baskets after a Caldwell triple propelling the Clippers to an 18-17 advantage with 9:47 left in the half.

• Caldwell reclaimed the lead behind a 7-0 run of its own, with back-to-back layups from senior forward Stephen Milhaven (Port Washington, N.Y.) cutting the deficit to two at 24-22 with 6:55 remaining in the half.

• A layup and triple from McFadden sandwiching a pair of Caldwell free throws made it a one-point game at 28-27, only for back-to-back layups for the host extending the gap to 32-27 with 2:57 left in the contest.

• Concordia cut the deficit to two off a Breeding triple, but a 6-0 run for the Cougars to end the half created a 38-30 halftime score.   

• Caldwell carried its first-half ending run into the second, scoring a layup on the initial possession to create a double-digit lead with six-more points added to the separation before a Sims layup ended the streak and made it 46-32 with 16:11 remaining in the contest.

• The Cougars responded to Sims layup with back-to-back baskets, but a 9-4 stretch for Concordia with Sims, Barnes, sophomore guard Jared Young (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) and McFadden all contributing to make it 52-41 with 11:51 left to play.

• Following a Caldwell layup, four-straight points from Goodridge and a Demello jumper cut the deficit to single digits at 54-47 with 8:54 remaining.

• Caldwell recreated its double-digit advantage at 63-52 off a 6-0 run, but a Young jumper, McFadden triple and two free throws from Demello cut the gap down to four at 63-59 with 4:42 remaining in the contest.

• The Clippers forced a one-possession game at 67-64 with 1:47 remaining in the contest, but Caldwell ended the night on a 6-2 run to hold onto the lead.

• The Clippers converted on 26-59 shots, going 6-27 from three-point territory and 8-11 from the free throw line.

• Caldwell finished 25-52 from the field, 7-17 from distance and 16-26 from the free throw line.

• Concordia recorded 14 assists while Caldwell had 17.

• Caldwell held a 40-29 advantage in rebounds.

• Concordia had 16 turnovers, resulting in 13 points for Caldwell. The host had 20 turnovers, leading to 27 Clippers' points.

• Concordia' bench scored 28 points while the Caldwell got 27 from its bench.

• Concordia recorded 11 steals with six blocks while Caldwell stole the ball 12 times with one block.
The men's basketball team concludes the 2018-19 season on Saturday, Mar. 2 at Post University in a 3 p.m. contest.
